Mick Foster

Saxophones ∙ Composer

Mick plays the fairly unusual bass saxophone, in a number of varied contexts. The bass is used to play classical music, contemporary and classic jazz, in folk orchestra La Banda Europa and for film and TV sessions.  It has even been seen on ITV's Downton Abbey!

Here are some of the projects which feature the bass saxophone.  The first is a performance of J S Bach's Prelude from the Cello Suite BWV 1008, recorded & videoed by Beau Blaise & Oliver Bowring at the University of Surrey.

Here's a track by Laura Jurd's Human Spirit project.  Laura uses the bass saxophone as the main bass instrument in her compositions for this group.  This performance was recorded live at the Barbican Centre as part of the London Jazz Festival 2014. The band features Laura, Chris Bachelor, Colm O Hara, Lauren Kinsella, Alex Roth & Corrie Dick.

This is a track by We Three, featuring Digby Fairweather on cornet & David Hackbridge Johnson on piano.  The bass saxophone takes the melody of the tune "The Nearness Of You". This is taken from the album Crackerbarrel Music.

Finally, Scottish composer Jim Sutherland uses the bass saxophone in La Banda Europa.  La Banda is a 36 piece orchestra which comprises traditional instruments from all over Europe, coming together to play Jim's music.  The bass is part of the brass section.
